Problem
Melanie ran at m/s for meters, then ran at m/s for the next meters, and finally ran at m/s for the final meters. What was her average speed, in meters per second, for the meter run? Express your answer as an improper fraction.
Solution
The average speed is the total distance traveled, namely , divided by the total time of the run. It took Melanie seconds to run the first meters, seconds to run the next meters, and seconds to run the final meters. Thus the total time of her run was seconds, and so her average speed for the run was meters per second.
Final answer
\frac{160}{33}
