Problem

Students decided to play a game with tokens. First they distributed all of the tokens so that each student had the same number of tokens. Once they did that, their teacher arrived wanting to join the game. Each student gave him of his tokens, so that everyone had the same number of tokens and the game could start. How many students were playing the game? (Hong Kong)
Solution
Let be the number of students.

Initially, the tokens are distributed equally, so each student gets tokens.

When the teacher arrives, each student gives him tokens, so the teacher receives tokens in total. Now there are people (the students and the teacher), and the tokens are distributed among them equally, so each person gets tokens.

After giving away tokens, each student has: tokens.

The teacher has tokens.

Since now everyone has the same number of tokens:

Multiply both sides by :

Expand:

Subtract from both sides:

Bring all terms to one side:

Divide both sides by :

Solve the quadratic equation:

So or .

Since must be positive, .

Answer: students were playing the game.
Final answer
